The Issue with the Tensioner

The most notable problem with the 1.6 CDTi lies in its timing chain system. The original equipment (OE) tensioner lacks a gasket, which causes oil to drain out when the engine is turned off. Consequently, at startup, the timing chain experiences slack and produces a rattling noise until the tensioner refills with oil and regains proper tension.

This slack in the chain can lead to serious issues, such as chain skipping and premature wear of both the chain and the metal guides. Additionally, debris from worn guides and metal fragments can find their way into the oil sump, creating further complications.

To make matters worse, the timing system is located behind the gearbox at the back of the engine, making repairs both time-consuming and costly.

When Should You Replace the Timing Chain?
